You've just had your laser piles surgery — or you're scheduled for one and want to know exactly what the recovery looks like. This is the honest, day-by-day guide that your surgeon may not have time to explain in detail.
Day 0 — Surgery Day
The procedure itself takes 30–45 minutes under spinal or short general anaesthesia. You won't feel anything during the procedure. After the surgery:
- You'll be shifted to a recovery ward and monitored for 2–4 hours
- A nurse will confirm you've passed urine (this is required before discharge)
- You'll receive your discharge medications: painkillers, stool softeners, and an antibiotic course
- Most patients go home the same evening
Pro tip: Bring loose, soft cotton pants or a lungi. Tight underwear will cause discomfort.
Day 1 — The First 24 Hours at Home
- Pain level: Mild to moderate ache (3–5 out of 10). The spinal anaesthesia wears off gradually. Your prescribed painkillers will manage this comfortably.
- Bleeding: Slight bloodstaining on the pad/dressing is completely normal. Do not panic.
- Diet: Start with liquids and soft foods — dal, khichdi, curd, bananas. Drink 3–4 litres of water. Take your stool softener.
- Activity: Rest at home. Short walks to the bathroom are fine. Avoid sitting for extended periods — lie on your side.
- The first bowel movement: This is the moment most patients dread. It will happen within 24–36 hours. Take your stool softener, drink warm water, and do NOT strain. It will be uncomfortable — but not as painful as you fear.
Day 2–3 — Turning the Corner
- Pain: Noticeably less than Day 1. Most patients reduce painkillers to just morning and evening doses.
- Bowel movements: Softer and easier with the high-fibre diet. Some burning sensation is normal — a sitz bath (warm water) immediately after helps enormously.
- Activity: You can sit for short periods. Walking around the house is encouraged.
- Diet: Continue high-fibre: oats, papayas, green vegetables, whole wheat roti. Avoid spicy food, red meat, maida, and alcohol.
Day 4–7 — Back to Light Work
- Pain: Minimal. Most patients stop painkillers by Day 4–5.
- Bowel movements: Almost normal. Continue stool softeners for the full course (usually 2 weeks).
- Work: 80% of desk workers return to work by Day 3–5. Work from home is ideal for the first week.
- Driving: You can drive short distances from Day 4 onwards if comfortable.
Week 2–4 — Full Recovery
- The internal wound continues healing. You may notice occasional mild discomfort or itching — this is normal healing.
- Resume light exercise (walking, yoga) from Week 2.
- Avoid heavy lifting and intense gym workouts until Week 3–4.
- Follow-up visit with your surgeon at Week 2.
Red Flags — When to Call Your Doctor Immediately
While complications after laser piles surgery are rare, contact your surgeon or SURGISAATHI immediately if you experience:
- Heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad every 30 minutes)
- Fever above 100.4°F (38°C)
- Inability to pass urine for more than 8 hours
- Severe pain that is not controlled by your prescribed medications
- Foul-smelling discharge from the surgical site
The Golden Rules for Preventing Recurrence
- Fibre is your best friend forever: 30g of fibre daily for life. Oats, fruits, vegetables, lentils.
- Hydration: 3–4 litres of water every single day.
- Never strain: If you can't go, get up and try later. Never sit on the toilet for more than 3 minutes.
- Move your body: Daily 30-minute walks prevent constipation.
- Annual check-up: See your proctologist once a year for a quick check-up, even if symptom-free.
